Indonesia Movie Industry: Gain or Challenge

Movie is an entertainment media which is not strange anymore at this time. It would not be difficult for movie lovers to find out the interesting movies in terms of story line or only the entertainment to release fatigue. Cinemas are everywhere, especially in the big cities. Movie lovers can easily access the website available to know the title, synopsis, until the schedule of the movies itself in all over the world.

In Indonesia, the big cities such as Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Surabaya have a large number of cinemas and also movies aired after another. However, it could be discovered that there are still many of Hollywood movies dominated in every cinemas. On the official website of cinema 21 and XXI in Indonesia,21cineplex.com, is seen that the amount of Indonesian movie aired in Bandung only four of the total of eleven movies. The rest are Hollywood movies in various genres.

The fact above shows that the amount of movies made by Indonesian still under the average of Hollywood movies. The comparison between Indonesian movies and Hollywood movies depends on the quality of the movies itself. “Indonesian movie industry is still far behind Thailand movies that advance rapidly. However, the quality of Indonesian movies nowadays is better than the previous years, indeed,” said Ryan Aditya (23), the editor of Cinemags magazine.

Talking about the quality, Indonesian movies cannot be separated from positive and negative sides that affected in a row of the development of the Indonesian movies itself. Ryan added that the positive side of Indonesia movies is the progress of the quality from the movies, both in terms of story line and also the technique aspects, while the negative side is most of Indonesian popular movies are adapted from popular novels. It is almost hard to find Indonesian movies with the original script that explode in the movie industry and have a strong and good quality of the story. Different with Hollywood which can develop original story without adapted from books or novels which cause Indonesian movies are difficult to develop and do not have the original story.

Indonesian movies also have not find out a new phase in taking movie genres. Currently, most of the movies made by Indonesian filmmakers are dwelled in drama, comedy, and horror, as stated by Ryan, “Drama and romance are the most developed genres in Indonesian movie industry, especially those which give dreams and hopes, for example Laskar Pelangi (The Rainbow Troops) and 5 cm. There were also religion theme, such as Ayat-Ayat Cinta (Love Verses) and Sang Kiai. The latest genre appears is action, for instance The Raid.”

Unfortunately, most of Indonesian action movies aired all this time were made by foreign directors, for example The Raid, directed by Garet Evans from the UK. Then recently a movie entitled Java Heat was directed by Conor Allyn from the US, which involves foreign famous Hollywood actor, Kellan Lutz (as Emmett in Twilight series) and Mickey Rourke (as Ivan Vanko in Iron Man 2). It seems that Indonesian filmmakers are rarely dare to take the challenge to do the same as the foreign director did.

Quality experienced by Indonesian movies can help to find out excess and shortage which can lead to the benchmark of the Indonesian movies development at the present. Ryan stated that the excess of the current Indonesian movies is a large number of new idealist filmmakers who want to lead Indonesian movies to be better. The motivations which make the filmmakers try to give the best are the high-level of competition-feeling and also they want to make something extraordinary, whereas, still there is a shortage videlicet lies in term of execution and the diversity of the genres.

Based on the Ryan’s point of view, Indonesian movies are assessed to the seasonal. For instance, if there is a movie with religion background appears and can attract a lot of audiences, other directors try to make new one with the same background also to attract a lot of audiences. It is all about advantages or gain. “There must be audiences of each genre of the movies,” he continued. “Movie performers, especially those who have asset, are still dwelled on market demand (profit oriented) and do not want to take risks to try something new. It answers the question why Indonesian movies still have lack of creativity. Indonesia needs young fresh filmmakers who have new ideas, those who dare to think out of the box, out of market genres. Seeing this kind of development, the quality of Indonesian movies are still far away from Hollywood movies. Nevertheless, if there are so many young filmmakers with their fresh ideas and have the ability of break the challenge, Hollywood’s quality is in Indonesia’s hand. (Aulia Angesti, 1002794)
